What is Fuller's Earth? Benefits and Uses Of Fuller's Earth
Fuller’s Earth is a type of mineral clay that occurs naturally in the earth’s crust. It is off-white in color and is made up of fine grained particles. Fuller’s Earth is also known as Earth Clay, Oil Absorption Clay, Bleaching Clay and Whitening Clay.
In India Fuller's Earth has been used as a beauty product since ancient times and is known as "Multani Mitti".
Fuller’s Earth has the capacity of attracting and drawing out impurities to the surface. In ancient times Fuller’s Earth was used to clean raw wool by soaking it in a mixture of water and Fuller’s Earth to draw out oil, dirt and other impurities from the wool fibers.

Composition of Fuller's Earth
The main component of Fuller’s Earth is a clay mineral called Montmorillonite. Montmorillonite is composed of very small particles of hydrous aluminium silicates. Other minerals such as Kaolinite, Attapulgite and Palygorskite are found in Fuller’s Earth. It also has traces of minerals such as calcite, dolomite and quartz. Montmorillonite are clay minerals that have a great capacity to absorb water. These minerals are end results of volcanic activity and hydrothermal activity beneath the earth’s crust.
Fuller's Earth removes impurities through a process called adsorption. Adsorption is a chemical process by which one substance attracts and holds the particles of another substance when they come in contact with each other. Adsorption is different from absorption. In the case of absorption one substance is dissolved and absorbed by another substance when they come in contact with each other. For example, tissue paper absorbs oil.
Fuller’s Earth is very good for oily and acne skin. It is a naturally occurring substance and is safe to use.
When applied on skin it draws out oil, dirt and absorbs the excess oil on the surface of the skin. Due to this property Fuller's earth is very effective in the treatment of oily skin, skin with acne or acne prone skin.
