Asucre Nityakalyani ~ Vinca Rosea ~ Madagascar Periwinkle

Nithya kalyani is an evergreen herbaceous plant that belongs to the Catharanthus species. Also known as rose periwinkle, nithya kalyani is distinct for its glossy, oval leaves and white, pink to purplish flowers with dark red center. This flowering shrub is endangered in the wild but is widely cultivated in tropical countries.

In Asia, nithya kalyani is a mainstay in many gardens but in India, it’s been used since ancient times as medicinal herb.



It is called nithyakalyani because it flowers daily year round and there are two varieties that are common in India. One variety produces white flowers and the other produces beautiful dark pink flowers. Madagascar periwinkle is a very common garden plant that you will find in most nurseries.

In traditional medicine it is used to treat diabetes. For this purpose it 4-5 leaves or 7 flowers are taken empty stomach in the morning with water. Its leaves juice are useful in treating insect sting.

1. Diabetes - Nithya kalyani is traditionally used to treat diabetes in many Asian folk medicines. In the Philippines and China, the plant is boiled for several minutes and consumed daily to help manage insulin level in the body and minimize high blood pressure.

2. Enhances Memory - The nithya kalyani seeds and leaves contain high level of vincamine, an alkaloid linked to enhanced memory and increased cognitive functions. Nithya kalyani helps enhance blood circulation in the brain, assists in brain metabolism, improves mental productivity, prevents memory loss, and enhances thinking ability by preventing the aging of brain cells. The herb may also help prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

3. Delays Signs of Aging - In the body, vincamine is metabolized into vinpocetine, a compound that delays the signs of aging and maintains the youthfulness of the skin. In order words, some active bioactive in nithya kalyani keep the brain and the skin young.

What’s more, nithya kalyani essence could be used as astringent to calm inflamed skin. Nithya kalyani is topically used to treat minor cuts and burns too as well as canker sores. In traditional Hawaiian medicine, nithya kalyani leaves and flowers are boiled and then applied on wounds to prevent external bleeding.

4. Cancer - Nithya kalyani is a popular herbal treatment for cancer including leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, malignant lymphomas, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, and Kaposi’s sarcoma. Taken as tea, the plant helps inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells to the rest of the body. The Vincristine in nithya kalyani is responsible for the plant’s powerful anticancer properties. Nithya kalyani also contains leurosi-dine and leurosine which helps treat Hodgkin’s disease.

5. Heal Wounds - Periwinkle can be used for treating wounds and to stop the bleeding very effectively. For this remedy, take a handful of leaves in a pan and boil it along with water till the water is reduced in half and strain. Now take a pure cotton cloth and sterilize it by boiling it in water and squeeze out the water completely. Dip the cloth in the prepared extract and squeeze little so that the cloth is not dripping and place the cloth over the wound like a bandage. This kind of external application does not have any side effects and can be safely done at home. Keep repeating the processes both morning and evening till the wound starts healing. If you don't have the plant at home, you can also collect the leaves when you can, dry them well under the sun and use it for treating wounds by boiling the dried leaves in water. The fresh leaves also can be boiled in any unrefined oil after bruising it. This oil will make an excellent ointment for treating wounds, scrapes and cuts.  

Other Uses

Nithya kalyani is used to treat a myriad of health problems and symptoms or pains caused by hormonal changes. The plant is used to treat diarrhea, throat problems, chest pain, intestinal problems, and inflammation. It’s also used to prevent fluid retention or edema and toothache. Nithya kalyani also helps strengthen the immune system as well as detoxifies the blood.  Madagascar periwinkle is mainly used for childhood leukemia and hodgkin's disease. 

I can't look at this plant without respect, as it saves thousands of lives of innocent children every year.

Important Note: Rosy periwinkle extract is proven to be effective for many types of cancers like lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, breast cancer, soft tissue sarcoma and leukemia and it is also cancer protective. But there are few problems when we use the fresh plant extract at home 1. It is toxic at certain levels and after certain duration 2. The dosage might vary from person to person for it to be effective. 3. It might interfere with certain medications. 

Just like most herbal medicine, nithya kalyani should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you are in some form of medication, consult your siddha or ayurveda doctor first before using nithya kalyani.
